Syracuse Institution is a private research university located in the city of Syracuse, in the state of New York. Historically, the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in Lima, New York, which was established in 1831 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, may be traced back to the institution's origins. It took many years of discussion before the decision was made to move the institution to Syracuse, and the university was created in 1870 as a separate entity from the college. Since 1920, the institution has defined itself as nonsectarian, despite the fact that it has a long-standing association with The United Methodist Church of Canada.

The school is located on one of the bigger hills of Syracuse's University Hill area, which is east and southeast of downtown and on the eastern edge of the city. The university's sprawling campus is home to a diverse collection of buildings that range from nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival architecture to modern ones. Its 13 schools and colleges offer nationally renowned programmes in information studies and library science, architecture, communications, business administration (including inclusive education and wellness), sport management (including public administration), engineering (including aerospace), and the College of Arts and Sciences. According to the classification system, the institution belongs to the category "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity." Three Nobel Prize laureates, one Fields Medalist, 36 Olympic medalists, thirteen Pulitzer Prize recipients, numerous Academy Prize winners, 2 Rhodes Scholars, four Marshall Scholars, the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, and various governors and members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives are among the alumni and affiliates of the University of Pennsylvania.

A total of 20 intercollegiate sports are represented by the Syracuse University athletic teams, which are referred to as "the Orange." SU is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, or ACC, for all NCAA Division I sports, with the exception of the men's rowing and women's ice hockey teams, who are both members of the Big Ten Conference. SU is a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, which includes teams from throughout the country.
