New York's Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County and the city's primary commercial centre. It is the fifth-most populous city in the state of New York, behind New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, and Rochester, and is the county seat of the county.

The city had a population of 148,620 people at the time of the 2020 census, while the surrounding metropolitan region had a population of 662,057 people. In Central New York, which has a population of nearly one million people, it serves as the economic and educational centre. Syracuse also has a number of conference facilities, including a convention centre in the city's downtown area. In honour of the old Greek city of Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian), which is located on the eastern coast of the Italian island of Sicily, Syracuse was founded.

Historically, the city has served as a significant crossroads during the previous two centuries, first between the Erie Canal and its branch canals, then between the railroad network and other transportation modes. Syracuse, New York, is located at the crossroads of Interstates 81 and 90. It has the biggest airport in the whole area.

On the SUNY Upstate Medical University campus are Syracuse University, the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and Le Moyne College, among other institutions.
