Early life and education

Susana Reberdito was born in San Sebastián, Spain, and grew up in Plasencia and Santander, Spain, where she moved In 1974 with her family.

From 1980 to 1984 she studied drawing and painting at the studios of Xesús Vázquez and Esteban de la Foz. She began university studies in 1982 and had her first group exhibition in 1983. In 1985 she moved to Madrid to finish her major in Art history, graduating with a Licenciatura degree from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1988.

From 1987 to 1993 attended the "Contemporary Art Workshops"[1] at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, held among others by Juan Navarro Baldeweg (1987), José Luis Alexanco (1988), Jiří Georg Dokoupil (1989), Soledad Sevilla (1989), and Magdalena Abakanowicz (1993). In 1988-1989 she lived in Tokyo, Japan. In 1990, after winning a public contest, she painted the mural at the Sala Griega of the :es:Palacio_de_Festivales_de_Cantabria|Palacio de Festivales de Santander working closely with the architect of the building Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. From 1990 to 1992 she lived and worked in the United States taking courses as a graduate student with Don Demouro, Ed Wilson, and Angelo Ippolito at the Binghamton University|State University of New York at Binghamton. Painting

Susana Reberdito in her studio In Susana Reberdito's painting has always had a very powerful monumentality, from her dancing figures in the Greek Room of the Santander Palace of Festivals to these oceans, even in the small format series. It seems strange to call "ocean" a 30 x 32 cm piece, but in fact the monumental effect does not decrease in this small series, if anything, it is accentuated. In the series everything is concentrated in the meeting between two consistencies, the densest substance in water and the lightest and most transparent substance in the cloud. In Ocean 2, the encounter is a path between the swelling sea and the warm cloud that glides over it, a point of becoming a loving hug. Among the small oceans, perhaps the most difficult are those where the black background makes it possible to perceive the variable transparencies of the great strokes of blue, as if the summer light dissolved in the darkness of the night. But the final feeling that Reberdito's work communicates is not one of dissolution, but of fulfillment. The wave and the mountain, the sea and the cloud, the water and the painting identified in a pure vital exaltation, in a celebration of life, with an intense sensual and, at the same time, almost religious emotion.[4]
