Susan Heitler is a Clinical psychologist in private practice in Denver Colorado.[1] She practiced from 1975 to 2020 at the Rose Medical Center in Denver, treating individuals, couples and families. She specializes in treating Depression (mood), anger, anxiety[2], marital problems[3][4], parental alienation, and conflict resolution[5][6][7] Her TED Talk, "Lift Depression With These 3 Prescriptions- Without-Pills"[8], has received over 1,300,000 views. Dr. Heitler's PsychologyToday.com[9] blog, "Resolution, Not Conflict", receives 90,000 monthly clicks and has over 25,000,000 views.[10]

Biography

Susan Heitler was born in 1945 in Massachusetts. She graduated from Harvard University in 1967, with a Bachelor of Arts in English language. She received her M.Ed. from Boston University in 1968, specializing in the education of emotionally disturbed children. Heitler was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from New York University in 1975.[11]

In her clinical work, Heitler has specialized in the treatment of couples and in giving workshops to train individual therapy practitioners in techniques of couples' therapy.[12] Heitler's writings have contributed an integrative therapy map for eclectic therapists (therapists who utilize techniques from multiple schools of treatment).[13] In addition, her writing has focused on increasing understanding of the process of conflict resolution.[14] She has done research on and written about conflict resolution as an element of psychotherapy treatment.[15][16]

Honors and Awards

  • Presented the keynote address, "Conflict Resolution: My Way, No MY Way", at the first Pan Arab Psychology Convention, Beirut, Lebanon in October 2016.
  • Gave a TED Talk in Wilmington Delaware in 2016, "Lift Depression With These 3 Prescriptions- Without-Pills"[8], has received over 1,300,000 views on YouTube.
  • Demonstrated couples therapy in the 1996 Master Therapist 10-part video series, "The Angry Couple: Conflict Resolution Therapy", produced by Newbridge Communications.[17]
  • Presented the 2007 Shane Marie Morrow lecture at the Denver Metro College Department of Psychology. The lecture topic was was on the psychology of terrorism, and was entitled, "Pleasure to Kill You".[18]

Personal life

Heitler and her husband Bruce maintain residences in Denver Colorado and in Jerusalem and Ra'anana Israel. They have been married for over 50 years and have four adult children and 16 grandchildren.
