Stephen Richer was elected to the position of Maricopa County Recorder during the 2020 general election. Richer took office on January 1, 2021.

Educational History and Background

Richer attended Tulane University, earning a Bachelor's degree and a J.D. from University of Chicago Law.

Political Career and History

During his 2019 campaign, Stephen Richer made repeated baseless conspiracy claims of voter fraud and produced no credible evidence to substantiate such claims.[1]

History Leading 2018 Election Audit Effort

In 2019, Richer led an "independent audit" to verify concerns that votes shifted at the last minute in the 2018 election and for which he alleged was suspicious of a widespread voter fraud conspiracy. Richer authored a 229-page report which did not reveal any credible evidence to support his claims. [2] His "independent audit" investigation sought volumes of public records, including texts between Recorder Adrian Fontes and Democratic Party attorneys Roopali Desai and Andrew Gaona (pg69), and also referenced George Soros (pg 63). [2]

Additionally, in this audit report, Richer aired theories that Democrat Recorder Adrian Fontes was coordinating with Congresswoman Kirsten Sinema and Democratic lawyers Desai and Gaona to initiate staged lawsuits to get records that were not otherwise available publicly. Fontes admitted that he did advise lawyers Desai and Gaona that they would need to file a lawsuit for the records they sought. Richer also alleged conspiracies involving the Arizona office of law firm Perkins Coie, but also did not substantiate any of these allegations of wrongdoing in his 229-page report.[2] This 2018 audit into alleged conspiracies, which Richer was unable to substantiate, was done in collaboration with Trump Transition lawyer Kory Langhoefer who was involved in the Mueller investigation and filed claims of irregularities related to the 2020 election.
