StarApple AI is a Jamaican startup company specialising in artificial intelligence (AI), founded by Adrian Dunkley in December 2019.[1] The company focuses on consumer and business analytics, as well as management consulting.

History

Established in 2019 by Adrian Dunkley in Kingston, Jamaica, StarApple initially directed its efforts toward AI development.[2] In September 2021, RJRGleaner Communications Group, the owner of RJR Radio, Television Jamaica, and The Gleaner newspaper, purchased a stake in the company.[2]

In October 2022, StarApple AI partnered with the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean for several projects. These included an AI-supported financial aid tool, a sports lab incorporating AI for drones and analytics for game outcome predictions, and learning labs for data analytics training.[3]

The company also has operations in Miami, Florida.[4][5]

Industry applications

StarApple offers information technology, consultancy, and corporate data analytics training.[2][6]

In January 2022, StarApple introduced non-fungible tokens (NFTs).[7] The company donated the proceeds from an NFT derived from a Jamaica Observer article to local STEAM programs[7]

Adrian Dunkley, the founder, uses the company's AI for artistic pursuits, creating paintings such as "Football Supernova" and "Blazing Sprint Goddess."[8] Dunkley believes in the capacity of AI to create employment opportunities in Jamaica.[9] Nevertheless, he promotes the implementation of protective measures for those adversely affected by the heightened prevalence of AI-generated content spanning text, audio, images, and videos.[10]

Technology and research

Since August 2022, StarApple has been developing an AI assistant coach system for football teams, with plans to expand to track and field.[11]

In April 2023, the company collaborated with the Game of Life Foundation to host the inaugural SportsBrain Youth Football Combine in Jamaica, using AI for player data collection, success rate forecasting, and program design.[12]

The company has suggested the use of AI to augment the tourism experience in Jamaica. Specifically, it proposes the establishment of an augmented reality (AR) network aimed at enhancing safety during excursions and other experiences and incorporating gamification elements into vacation activities.[13]

In October 2023, the company's "Section 9" research group employed the GPT-4V multimodal model to test 24 candy brands after the hospitalisation of more than 60 students.[14] Multimodal AI models are crafted to analyze, interpret, and derive insights from diverse data types, including text and images.[15] The AI model identified substances, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in one of the sweet treats.[14] The THC-infused candies exhibited a marked resemblance to conventional sweets.[15]

Community involvement

StarApple AI actively participates in various community sectors, including sports, tourism, education, and entertainment.[16] Initiatives include offering generative AI training for companies and sponsoring the JamA.I.ca Codefest Hackathon hosted by the US Embassy in Jamaica.[17]
