Sophie-Marie Kumpen (born 30 October 1975) is a Belgian former karter and racing driver who competed in the Formula A, K, and Super A classes of the Karting World Championship for five years.[1] She is also the mother of Max Verstappen, the and Formula One world champion.
Career
Sophie Kumpen began go-karting at the age of 10.[2] She had a successful career, and competed alongside future Formula One drivers such as Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella.[2] In 1995, at 16 years old, she finished ninth in the Formula A World Championship and won the Andrea Margutti Trophy.[3][4]
Kumpen returned to racing in 2013 when she made her debut at the Formido Swift Cup.[5] During the final race of the 2013 season, at the Circuit Zandvoort, she had an incident when her Suzuki Swift hit a barrier and fractured her spine.[6] After this, Kumpen chose not to continue her racing career.[7]
After retiring from racing, Kumpen started working as a social worker at OCMW in Maaseik.[8]
Personal life
Kumpen's father, Robert Kumpen, was the chairman of Belgian professional football club, KRC Genk, from 1993 to 1995.[9] His brother Paul Kumpen, as well as Paul Kumpen's son Anthony Kumpen, are both former racing drivers.[10]
Sophie Kumpen married Jos Verstappen in 1996.[2][11] They divorced in 2008.[12] They have two children, including Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen.[13][14]
Media appearance
In 2020, Kumpen appeared alongside her son, Max, in the television mini series documentary produced by Ziggo Sport, Max Verstappen: Whatever It Takes.[15]
