Sneakers4Good is an American social enterprise and sneaker reuse and recycling organization headquartered in Orlando, Florida. Founded in 2018, the organization partners with running clubs, retailers, gyms, road races and marathons, and sports-focused community groups to collect gently worn, used and new athletic shoes for repurposing and reuse. Its programs aim to reduce sneaker waste while supporting community and social good initiatives in North America and economic opportunities in developing nations.[1]

History

Sneakers4Good was established in 2018 as a specialized division of Funds2Orgs, a North American shoe drive fundraising organization. The initiative was developed in response to growing demand from runners, race organizers, and athletic retailers seeking sustainable alternatives for disposing of gently worn running shoes.[2]

According to the organization, the program expanded from a small sustainability initiative into a nationwide sneaker collection and recycling network serving the running community. In 2022, Sneakers4Good became its own for-profit company due to its success in the running and athletic communities.[3]

The organization is headquartered in Orlando, Florida, and operates throughout the United States through partnerships with sporting events, running stores, fitness centers. and the healthcare sector through its Healthcare Heroes program.

Operations

Sneakers4Good collects gently worn, used and new athletic shoes through collection efforts, mail-in programs, and event partnerships. Donated sneakers are sorted according to condition. Reusable footwear is distributed through global economic networks of micro-enterprises in developing nations, while athletic shoes that are unsuitable for reuse are directed toward recycling and material recovery programs.

The organization operates programs that enable participating running retailers, sports clubs, and road races to get paid for their community initiatives through sneaker collection campaigns.

Mission and Sustainability

Sneakers4Good states that its mission is to help individuals and organizations use athletic footwear "for good" by extending the life cycle of sneakers and reducing landfill waste. The organization cites environmental concerns associated with discarded footwear, noting that hundreds of millions of shoes are disposed of annually in the United States and may take decades to decompose.

The program promotes what it describes as a "reuse economy," in which contributed footwear is redirected for continued use rather than immediate disposal. According to the organization, this approach supports environmental sustainability efforts while creating economic opportunities for small business operators in developing countries.

Partnerships

Sneakers4Good has partnered with running clubs, athletic running retailers, marathon and road race organizers, and community organizations across the United States. The organization has participated in sustainability initiatives associated with major running events, such as the Boston and Marine Corps Marathons and has collaborated with fitness and sports organizations to establish sneaker collection programs.

In 2026, the Upper Valley Aquatic Center (UVAC) announced a partnership with Sneakers4Good to collect used athletic footwear from its members as part of a sustainability initiative aimed at reducing landfill waste.[4]

Leadership

The organization was founded by Wayne Elsey, an entrepreneur and global social enterprise executive involved in the footwear industry for his entire career. Elsey has stated that the organization seeks to create local opportunities that generate global social and environmental impact.
