Siva Mathiyazhagan (born 1987) is a transnational social work practitioner-scholar. He is currently the Founder-Director of the NGO Trust for Youth and Child Leadership (TYCL) International and the Associate Director of Strategies and Impact at the SAFELab, Columbia University[1]. As part of his role at TYCL, he also serves as a representative to the United Nations[1] and has served as a keynote speaker at UN events including the 36th UN Social Work Day[2]. In 2020, Mathiyazhagan was appointed as a lecturer in field education at the Columbia School of Social Work, New York[1].

Childhood and Education

Mathiyazhagan graduated from Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Government High School, Pondicherry, India and received a Bachelors in Commerce (B.Com) from Thiruvalluvar University[3]. He subsequently received his Masters in Social Work and a PhD specialised in child-centred community development from Pondicherry University[3].

Research

Mathiyazhagan uses youth-led participatory action methods to develop community-based innovations for social change[1]. His research focuses on youth mental health and suicidal expressions on social media using a hybrid version of qualitative indigenous research methodologies and Contextual Analysis of Social Media (CASM) to understand youth expressions on social media in native/regional languages to prevent emotional extremisms[1].

Since February 2020, Mathiyazhagan has served as Associate Director of Strategies and Impact at Columbia University’s SAFELab, based in New York[1]. Founded by Desmond Upton Patton, the SafeLab researches violence experienced by young people[4]. One aspect of SAFELab’s work includes exploring artificial intelligence as a tool to accurately identify the language and behaviour young people use on social media platforms as part of youth violence prevention efforts[4]. Mathiyazhagan has co-authored a policy brief advocating for the involvement of social workers in artificial intelligence policymaking, highlighting how marginalized groups are at risk of harm due to algorithmic biases and lack of federal oversight of artificial intelligence[5].
