Shorya Mahanot (born 2006) is an abstract artist with a distinct, signature style and is considered as the youngest signature style abstract artist from India.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6].

Life and work

Shorya started his art journey in 2011 with a solo exhibition at Chambers Terrace, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Mumbai, at a young age of four.[7][8][9][10] In 2012, he was first recognized by R. K. Laxman|Late Indian R. K. Laxman|Cartoonist R.K. Laxman and was called to present his abstract paintings in a live demo at Laxman's Residence.[11][12] [13][14] [15] [16][17]His abstract art came into the international contemporary scene in March 2013, when his art was exhibited in the 35th Annual Art Expo, NY, USA [18] [19] [20] in a silent auction donation for Autism Speaks Foundation.[21] and at Spectrum New York and Florida, USA.[22] He has collaborated with Microsoft India and has also been a TEDx speaker.[23]

He lives and works from Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh.

Early life and education

Born in Neemuch, Shorya was a student of Kendriya Vidhyalaya, Neemuch (M.P.) from standard 1 to standard 6. From standard sixth onwards, he has been studying and schooled at home.

Style and Technique

He uses color composition with deliberate consideration to balance the symmetry between his brushstrokes, dripping and pouring on the canvas. Each of Shorya’s works takes approximately four to five days to make and contains up to two or more layers of pigments. He works with acrylic paints in a heavy impasto technique. .

Art Expo 2013, in a press release, stated Shorya Mahanot’s Art as:

"Pollock-like smattering and bold, geometric forms cover the canvases of India's youngest abstract artist."[24] File:Shorya's-art-journey-from-2011-to-2019.jpg|alt=A collage of abstract paintings by Youngest Signature Style Abstract Artist Shorya Mahanot from 2011 to 2019 with descriptions about dimensions and material used to create|thumb|Evolution of Shorya's Signature Style in his Abstract Paintings from 2011 to 2019

Critical Reception

"The six-year-old artist brings his works and canvases to life though rich and masterful colour use while employing a technique that can be compared to Jackson Pollock's drip painting or action painting."

- The Art Guide, 2013[25]

“His art is multilayered, inspired from nature.”

“At 10 going on 11, Shorya has created over 100 works in acrylic, some canvases bigger than his tiny frame.”

“...His family had never seen art like this before — there were shades of Jackson Pollock...”

- Reader’s Digest, 2018[26]

"Each movement appeared deliberate but exaggerated as if his paintings were an unruly orchestra under his conduction."

- The Guardian, 2012[27]

"The most significant aspect of Shorya's paintings is they have a signature unique to Shorya that all great artists across the globe uphold. Each of his paintings has a style of his own and subtly they are all related to each other. But he is simply oblivious of the magic that his brush creates."

- Hindustan Times, 2013[28]
