Shirley Ze Yu (born May 10, 1978) is a Chinese-American economist, broadcaster, writer, keynote speaker, and an independent board of director. Currently, Shirley Ze Yu serves as a senior practitioner fellow at Harvard Kennedy School, director of the China-Africa Initiative, FLIA, at the London School of Economics, an MBA professor at the IE Business School, and a Distinguished Foreign Faculty Professor at the National Defence University, Islamabad. She is also a member of the Davos Expert Network on China, 5G, and geo-economics.[1][2]

Shirley Ze Yu is the founder of China BIG Idea by Yu and Partners, regarded for offering insightful information about China to senior Fortune Global 500 executives and policy stakeholders. Shirley Ze Yu is the author of three books - Fearless Pursuit;, On China, byAmbassadors; The Rise of the RMB and the Fall of the Yen. She has also published articles in the Financial Times, the South China Morning Post[3][4] on topics like Belt and Road Initiative and Huawei.

Shirley Ze Yu has gained recognition as a prolific voice on China’s political economy, who is often seen commenting on China's situation on international media, including the BBC,[5] Blomberg and Channel News Asia, CNN, PBS Frontline, Aljazeera, and Yahoo. As a keynote speaker, Shirley Ze Yu has addressed several national and international events sharing her expertise as a political economist at venues like Chatham House, Harvard Kennedy School, Asia Society,[6] Oxford University, Cambridge University, Stanford University, London School of Economics,[7] Royal Society for Asian Affairs, to name a few.

Early life and education

Shirley Ze Yu was born on May 10 in 1978. Shirley Ze Yu holds a master’s degree in Government from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Political Economy from Peking University.

Career

Shirley Ze Yu started her career working for an investment banking company Merrill lynch. She returned to China in 2009 to work as news anchor with China National Television (currently CGTN).[8]

In 2017, Shirley Ze Yu became theVP of Strategies & Innovation, and Board Secretary at the US-listed Xinyuan Real Estate Co. Ltd. During her time there, Shirley Ze Yu developed and oversaw the corporate global and financing strategies, and supervised the Group’s start-up technology portfolio.[9][10]

In 2018, Shirley Ze Yu was appointed as the Board Observer of Blackstone Loan Financing Ltd, on a one-year tenure.[11] In the same year, she became a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School.[12]

In 2019, Shirley Ze Yu became a media commentator for the BBC News[13] and in 2020, for Bloomberg News. In 2020, Shirley Ze Yu ventured into the teaching profession and became a professor at the IE Business School. In 2021, she was appointed as a non-executive director at Eurasia International Commercial Bank and also joined the expert network at the World Economic Forum.[14]

She hosts regular guest columns at the South China Morning Post[15] and the National News.[16][17]
