Sheikh Mansur Battalion is one of the two Chechen volunteer battalions that have fought against Russia and Russian-backed separatists in the Russo-Ukrainian war and the war in Donbass. Most of the fighters are from the form de facto independent Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, but the battalion also includes volunteers from Ingush, Dagestan, and Ossetia.[1]

In June 2021 Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the sanctions list of Ukraine’s Council of National Security and Defence which included Chechen, Dagestani and Ingush volunteers who fought for Ukraine were included as part of these sanctions and risked being deported to Russia as most were Russian Citizens.[2][3] In 2019, a volunteer from Ingush was deported to Russia where he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.[4] Some members of the battalion have still not received Ukrainian citizenship or residence permits in Ukraine, while others received theirs in 2019.[2][5]
