Shaoxiong "Dennis" Zheng (simplified Chinese: 郑少雄; 1997 - November 9, 2021) was a Master's student of the Department of Statistics at the University of Chicago. He was shot and killed in an armed robbery at approximately 1:54 p.m.[1] Tuesday, Nov 9th on the sidewalk in the [https://goo.gl/maps/bNZXtpcXuxxzXLZE9 900th block of East 54th Place and Ellis Avenue[2], merely half a block north of the university campus[3]. As of November 2021, He was the third UChicago student to die of near-campus gun violence after Yiran Fan and Max Lewis [4][5][6].

Biography

Shaoxiong Zheng was born in 1997[7] in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China. He attended Chengdu No.7 High School|Chengdu No. 7 High School[8], and received his bachelor's degree at the University of Hong Kong in 2019, followed by a master’s degree in Statistics at the University of Chicago in June 2021[9]. His death led to widespread condolence, including UChicago's memorial service held on Nov 18th at the Rockefeller Chapel [10], on-campus rally against violence [11], and Chinese ambassador to the US Qin Gang expressing "Shocked & dismayed by the murder... We call for justice in his case & protection of Chinese in US from hatred & xenophobia." on Twitter [12].
