I Came Upon a Lighthouse

Shantanu Naidu is an Indian entrepreneur, author, and social innovator. He is best known as the founder of Goodfellows, a startup that provides companionship services for senior citizens, and as a close aide and mentee of Indian industrialist Ratan Tata, who described Naidu as his “lighthouse.”

Early life and education

Naidu was born in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He pursued an engineering degree and later completed his MBA at Cornell University in the United States, a program supported by Ratan Tata.[1]

Career

Naidu began his career with a focus on social impact and innovation. While in college, he started a project to protect stray dogs from road accidents by designing reflective collars, which later grew into the initiative Motopaws. This project drew the attention of Ratan Tata, an animal lover, who invested in it and subsequently became Naidu’s mentor.[2]

Naidu went on to work closely with Tata as his assistant and became a trusted aide in both professional and personal matters. Over the years, the two developed a strong friendship, with Tata often referring to Naidu as his "lighthouse."

In 2021, Naidu launched Goodfellows, a startup providing companionship and emotional support for senior citizens through young graduates. The initiative received backing from Ratan Tata, who publicly supported its mission.[3]

Relationship with Ratan Tata

Naidu is widely recognized for his close relationship with Ratan Tata. Apart from professional collaboration, the two shared a mentor-mentee and personal bond. Tata financed Naidu’s higher studies at Cornell and supported his ventures. Following Tata’s death in 2024, Naidu has been noted for continuing to honor their bond and legacy.[4]

Public presence

Naidu frequently shares insights on mentorship, purpose, and social entrepreneurship through speaking engagements and social media platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, where he documents his initiatives and reflections.
