Shafiq Omar Kakar (Pashto: شفیق کاکړ ; born in Laghman Province, Afghanistan) is a painter who specializes in symbolic realism[1] and plays an important role in the communication network of Afghan artists. He immigrated to the Netherlands in 1998 where he now lives and works as an artist, curator, and researcher.

Career

Shafiq Kakar works in Van Abbemuseum[2] in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In 2009 he initiated a long-term research project called The Afghan Art Research Project[3] to spread knowledge about Afghan art and artists and to display Afghanistan from a different perspective.

Since 2009 Shafiq has built a significant network of Afghan artists inside and outside Afghanistan. To motivate and inspire artists in addition to keeping them updated and familiar with modern art in the world, he has been organizing various lectures, seminars, robot-guided tours, and international online exhibitions, involving international art experts. He also manages exhibitions for Afghan Artists abroad.

In 2017 Shafiq Kakar visited several major cities in Afghanistan like Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, Herat, Kandahar, Bamyan and Jalalabad and interviewed around 100 well-known artists there. As a result, he created a database of Afghan artists which was later used to coordinate the Afghan Artists Rescue Mission after the takeover of Afghanistan by Taliban in August 2022.

Shafiq Omar Kakar is a coordinator of the Living Room Project[4][5] created by a Palestinian architect Sandi Hilal. The project is currently active and coordinated by Shafiq Kakar in Van Abbemuseum[6]. He also temporary coordinated the Living Room in U-jazdowski museum[7][8] in Warsaw, Poland.
