Sebastian Mikosz (born 1973) is Senior Vice President, Environment and Sustainability at IATA (International Air Transport Association). IATA’s mission is to represent, lead and serve the airline industry. It represents some 290 airlines comprising 82% of global air traffic. He was appointed Senior Vice President for Member and External Relations in 2020[1] before taking up his current position as is IATA's first SVP for Environment/Sustainability.[2] He is a former CEO of Kenya Airways and LOT Polish Airlines. He is bilingual in French and Polish and fluent in English and Russian.

Early life

Born in Krakow, Poland to a Polish father and French mother, Mikosz obtained his high school certificate (matura) at V High School A.Witkowski in 1992 followed by a Master’s degree in economics and finance from the Paris-based Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) (Wikipedia link) in 1997.

Career

Mikosz began his career in Paris in the emerging markets unit of Arthur Andersen, before returning to Poland in 2000 to help establish the online brokerage house, Fast Trade. In 2001, he was appointed managing director of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Poland [1]. Between July 2003 – September 2006, he was vice-president of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PALiLZ) [2], overseeing inward foreign investment to Poland.

In 2009, Mikosz was appointed CEO of Polish flag carrier LOT Polish Airlines - the first of two periods as LOT CEO. The first tenure ended after 19 months, but he was re-appointed in 2015 to turn the ailing airline around (3). In his second term at LOT, the airline posted its first profit in seven years (4) but he resigned in 2015, reportedly over delays in privatising the airline (5).

Between his two terms at LOT, Mikosz was a senior advisor to Société Générale investment bank.

In 2015 he was appointed CEO of eSKY Group [3]- Poland's biggest online travel agency operating in more than 20 countries in Europe and South America.

In 2017, two years after joining eSKY, he returned to aviation as Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways - brought in as a turnaround specialist to restructure the airline to recover from four years of losses (6). He also served as a non-executive board member of Kenya Airways subsidiaries Jambojet, Tanzanian operator Precision Air and was chairman of the board of cargo operator KAHL and a member of the IATA Board of Governors.

Under his two-year leadership, Kenya Airways restructured $US2 billion of debt and narrowed annual lossesDuring his two years at Kenya Airways, Mikosz announced his resignation in May 2019, citing "personal reasons" (7).

At the beginning of 2020, Mikosz joined IATA as Senior Vice President for Member and External Affairs before accepting a new position to head up IATA’s environmental division, the first time the environmental operation has been led by an SVP.

In 2011, he authored a book There Is a Pilot With Us [4] in Polish, (Leci z nami pilot) on the functions and management of modern-day airlines.

He is married with three sons.
