An official in government or company who has a position of authority below the president (chief executive officer) is referred to as a vice president, or director in British English. Additionally, executive vice presidents may be referred to, indicating that the vice president is a member of the executive branch of the government, institution, or corporation. The phrase "vice president" derives from the Latin word vice, which means "in place of," and he or she generally acts as the president's pro tempore (Latin: 'for the time being'). In certain nations, the vice president is referred to as the vice president or the deputy president. The acronym VP is often used in ordinary conversation.
