Scotty Le Edler is an American politician, academic, and educator, and an incumbent Town Councilman for the Town of Milton, Delaware. Prior to his election, Edler worked as a history and government professor, in traditional and online format, at various colleges and universities. He was elected to the Milton Town Council in March 2023, and took office on April 03, 2023.

Biography

Scotty Le Edler was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Leroy Edler Jr. and Janice Nan Ash. He attended the Burkholder School for pre-K through kindergarten, then Wilmington Christian School for first grade. From second through fifth grades, Edler attended New Castle Baptist Academy, later renamed New Castle Christian Academy. After fifth grade his parents divorced and along with his mother and brother they relocated to the Delaware Beaches where they had summered every year. He attended Cape Henlopen School District schools including Lewes Middle School (now the site of Lewes Elementary School) for sixth grade, Milton Middle School (now the site of Milton Elementary School) for seventh and eighth grades. He attended high school at Cape Henlopen High School graduating in 1998.[1]

After high school, Edler attended Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History in May 2003.[2] He earned membership in the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society in 2002 and served as the Sigma Tau Chapter President for the 2002-2003 academic year.[3]

He then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas to attend Midwestern State University. There he earned his Master of Arts in History in May 2006.[4][5] He served as the Graduate Senator for the MSU Student Government Association for the 2004-2005 academic year. His thesis, "The Fall and Exile of Wilhelm II, The Last Kaiser of Germany: A 21st Century Assessment" was chaired by Dr. Dirk Lindemann, PhD.[6]

Academic Career

Edler began his career in July 2007 teaching at North Central Texas College. He taught history at their Gainesville, Texas, Bowie, Texas, and Corinth, Texas locations until August 2010. While at NCTC, he taught United States History I and United States History II.

In August 2007, Edler also joined Navarro College. He taught at their Corsicana, Texas, Waxahachie, Texas, and Midlothian, Texas campuses. He taught on campus until August 2010, but since then Edler has taught virtually for Navarro College. He has taught United States History I, United States History II, Texas History, Federal Government, Texas Government, Western Civilization I, and Western Civilization II.

Upon relocation to Galveston, Texas for his wife to attend medical school, Edler joined the faculty at Galveston College. He served on campus and virtually from July 2011 to June 2022. He taught United States History I, United States History II, and Texas History. He was selected by students and colleagues for the Galveston College Exceptional Service Award for Adjunct Faculty for the 2012-2013 academic year.[7]

Edler joined the faculty at Southern New Hampshire University in April 2016 for the College of Online and Continuing Education (COCE). He currently teaches United States History I, United States History II, World Civilizations from Prehistory to 1500, World Civilizations from 1500 to Present, Modern European History (1890-Present), Modern Russia, Modern Germany (1871-Present), World War I, and World War II. He has also been a participant on their history podcast series, "Working Historians" giving talks on his career and his comparison of the Black Death, the Spanish Flu, and Covid-19.[8][9][10]

Political Life

Edler was appointed by Mayor John R. Collier to serve as a member of the Town of Milton's Parks and Recreation Committee in April 2022.

He announced his candidacy for the Town Council seat being vacated by retiring Councilman Richard Baty on December 13, 2022, followed by a formal announcement on January 01, 2023.[11] As there were only two candidates who filed by the filing deadline for the two open seats, the Board of Elections met on January 17, 2023, to certify the candidates and cancel the municipal elections that were set for March 04, 2023.[12] Edler was deemed elected along with the incumbent, Councilwoman Randi Meredith, who was seeking a second three-year term.[13]

He was sworn in at the April 03, 2023, council meeting.[14] At that meeting he was appointed by Mayor Collier to serve as the Secretary of the Town Council for 2023-2024.[15] He was also appointed as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee, succeeding Meredith in that role.

Personal Life

Edler is married to the former Melisa M. (Guthrie) Edler.[16] They met at Midwestern State University.

They have one son, Scotty Le "SJ" Edler Jr.

He has three half-sisters from his father's first marriage and one brother, Matthew Jeremy Edler.
