Santiago Cirugeda is an architect, artist and activist from Seville, Spain. He founded Recetas Urbanas in 2003, an architecture studio specialized in civic empowerment.

Education and career

Born in 1971 in Seville, he graduated from the International University of Catalonia (ESARQ)[1] and started his architect career in 1996[2].

Recetas Urbanas

Recetas Urbanas is the Spanish for "Urban Prescriptions". The studio is known for its subversive questioning of the architectural practice and the city regulation. With the idea that architecture should be accessible to everybody, Recetas Urbanas' approach aims at letting people appropriate urban space.[2] Since its creation in 2003, the studio developed significant experience in self construction, material recycling and re-employment, and collective design.[3]

Selected projects

Inhabit the air, 2018

An installation built in Nave 11, Matadero Madrid, Madrid, in collaboration with women collectives, Escuela Artediez's students and GANDIABLASCO (outdoor furniture company).[4]

Other works

Santiago Cirugeda is also active as a urbanism consultant. Besides that, he teaches through workshops[5].

Alvarez Benitez, the book tells about Cirugeda's initiative to let activist groups turn 42 salvaged containers into self-constructed and self-managed spaces, in different Spanish locations. It was awarded the Prize of Thought and Criticism in Architecture by Foment de les Arts i el Disseny (FAD) in 2011.[7]
