Sanjoy Bhattacharya (born 01 September, 1963[1]) is the Chairman and Managing Director[2] of Andrew Yule and Company Limited, A Government of India Enterprise.[3][4]. During his tenure, the tea exports of the Company grew by 431%[5] and received wider recognition [6][7] including a congratulatory message from the Prime Minister of India [8]. The MIM Heritage Tea Bungalow was inaugurated by Mahendra Nath Pandey, Union Minister for Heavy Industries, in presence of Bhattacharya in May 2022 and it was expected that the MIM Tea Resort, upon completion by August, 2023, would open up to be a major tourist destination in Darjeeling, West Bengal [6]. He also serves as the Chairman of Tide Water Oil Company India Limited [9][10], a company known for the Veedol brand of industrial lubricants [11]. In July 2018, he was appointed an Additional Director on the Board of Directors of Webfil Limited [12] and also served as the Chairman of Hooghly Printing Company Limited, A Government of India Enterprise.

Early Life and Education

Bhattacharya stood ninth in the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education in 1986 from Nona Chandanpukur Manmatha Nath High School.[13]. He was conferred upon a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Mechanical Engineering by Jadavpur University and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management by Indira Gandhi National Open University [12][14]. In addition, he completed a Diploma in Computer in Office Management from the same university [14] and was awarded the University Gold Medal [12]

Career

Bhattacharya has considerable experience in sales and marketing, design and product development[12]. He was a Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of International Conference on Fan Noise, Technology and Numerical Methods 2015[15], organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He was appointed as the Director (Planning) of Andrew Yule and Company Limited for a period of five years in 2018 [16] upon being recommended by the Public Enterprises Selection Board, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India. He was Nominated as a Director of the New Town Telecom Infrastructure Development Company Limited in 2018 and he continued in that position for less than a year [17]. In 2020, he was recommended by the same board for appointment as the Chairman and Managing Director of Andrew Yule and Company Limited [18] and he assumed charge on 01 September, 2020 after the proposal for appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet in May, 2020 [19]. On 13 November, 2020 he assumed the office of Director of Veedol International Limited[20]. In June, 2021 the Board of the Company approved the proposal of closure of the Electrical - Kolkata Operations Division of Andrew Yule and Company Limited [21] and this elicited an expression of disapproval from the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise, Government of West Bengal [22]. Bhattacharya did not publicly make comments pertaining to the closure [23]. The Azadi Amrut Chai line of tea products was launched by Mahendra Nath Pandey in presence of Bhattacharya in October, 2021 to commemorate the 75th year of Independence of India [24]. In March, 2023 the Company reported net sales of ₹ 81.14 Crores, up by over 30% as compared to the figure of March, 2022 [25]. In August, 2023 the Company announced plans to re-launch the Tea Machinery Division as well as the Projects Division with emphasis on prospective air pollution and water pollution control projects [26]. His tenure as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Company shall end on 31 August, 2023 [27]
