Sandeep Shrivastava is an Indian screenwriter (Film / TV and OTT), lyricist and actor known for his edgy screenplays and dialogues[1].
His notable works as a screenwriter include films like Ab Tak Chhappan, New York (2009 film), Shivaay, the upcoming film Shershaah, and Disney+ Hotstar’s Aarya (TV series), a web series starring Sushmita Sen.
Sandeep has also written dialogues for Kabul Express, Sachin: A Billion Dreams (Hindi) and the video game Ab Tak Chhappan: Fatal Encounter.
He has penned lyrics for songs in movies like Life in a Metro[2], New York (2009 film)|New York[3], Vishwaroopam II[4], Kahaani[5] and Ludo (film)|Ludo[6].
Early Life and Career
Sandeep was born in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. He spent his childhood and did his schooling in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, Chhattisgarh[1].
After completing his MBA in New Delhi, Sandeep worked in advertising and created many corporate ad campaigns for NTPC, NHPC, U.P. Tourism, the Government of U.P. and the Hindustan Times to name a few.
In his pursuit of a bigger creative gratification, Sandeep went on to do theatre where he worked with Yatrik and Ruchika Theatre Groups in New Delhi. His work as an amateur theatre artist led to his selection in Living Theatre, New Delhi. Here he got to learn the finer nuances of drama from the very prolific Ebrahim Alkazi, the founder director of National School of Drama, New Delhi.
Sandeep’s background in theatre and advertising helped him understand film and television as a medium. He began working with television production companies in New Delhi as an assistant director, post production technician and production executive for television shows based on current affairs that aired on Doordarshan and DD Metro in the early 90s.
Television
He wrote several episodes for Reporter, a weekly fiction series that aired on DD Metro. He also scripted episodes for the popular music countdown show Superhit Muqabla. He later joined Nimbus Communications as an in-house writer. He was the writer and script supervisor on Nimbus’s daily soap called Farz for DD National. He supervised and guided the writing - story, screenplay and dialogues for multiple episodes[1].
He later decided to branch out and became a freelance writer with the weekly soap called Daraar that aired on Zee TV for many years[1].
As a freelance writer he wrote several episodes of Sea Hawks (TV series) produced by UTV Motion Pictures, a show based on the lives of Coast Guards in India as well as numerous episodes of Balaji Telefilms’ daily soap Itihaas (TV series), and multiple episodes of Kittie Party which aired on Zee TV.
He wrote the story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for Zee TV’s critically acclaimed daily soap Manzilein Apani Apani produced and directed by Manzilein Apani Apani. Sandeep was also the Creative Director on this show[1].
He has also written and produced episodes of X Zone and Rishtey (TV series) for Zee Entertainment Enterprises under the banner - Wisdom Tree Productions[7].
Film (Screenplays, Dialogues, and Lyrics)
His first big break as a screenwriter for film came when the movie Ab Tak Chhappan[8] was released. Sandeep wrote the Screenplay and Dialogues for this Nana Patekar starrer, produced by Ram Gopal Varma and directed by Shimit Amin. He received nominations for story, screenplay and dialogue at the Screen Awards|Screen.[9], International Indian Film Academy Awards and Zee Cine Awards.
He wrote dialogues (uncredited) for and also worked in the direction team of a movie called Saaya (2003 film), directed by Anurag Basu, produced by Vishesh Films Production.
Sandeep won the prestigious V. Shantaram Award[5] for the 2009 release New York (2009 film)|New York, which he wrote screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for.
As a lyricist Sandeep has written songs for films like Life in a Metro[2], New York (2009 film)[3], Kahaani[10], Shivaay[11], Vishwaroopam II[4] and the recently released film Ludo (film)[12]
Sandeep has collaborated with Yash Raj Films in various capacities as a writer on the award winning film New York, as Associate Director on Kabir Khan (director) film Kabul Express to conducting an acting workshop for the girls who formed the Indian Hockey Team in the blockbuster Chak De! India.
His last film releases have been the Ajay Devgn starrer Shivaay (story, screenplay and dialogues)[13] and Sachin: A Billion Dreams (Hindi script)[14].
Sandeep adapted the Dutch series Penoza into Hindi as a feature film script which later took shape as Aarya (TV series)[15], a web series featuring Sushmita Sen on Hotstar.
Sandeep has written the story, screenplay and dialogues for Shershaah, a biopic of Param Vir Chakra awardee Vikram Batra, produced by Dharma Productions which is scheduled to release August 12, 2021 on Amazon Prime Video[16]
Sandeep is currently working on multiple film and series projects for leading production houses and OTT platforms.
Actor
Sandeep has also acted in television series and films. He acted in Shyam Benegal’s movies like Samar[17], Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose- the Forgotten Hero[14] and Samvidhaan on Rajya Sabha TV[18]. Sandeep played one of the lead characters in the action series Commando, produced by Inhouse Productions and aired on Zee TV. He has also done one off roles in shows like Saturday Suspense, Thriller at Ten, Kalash - Ek Vishwaas, Class of 83, Upstarts (film), Shivaay[19].
Sandeep can also be seen as an actor in TVCs such as Tasty Treats, Ram Rajya Rishta (Neptune Builders).
