Ryan Douglas is an American-Canadian CEO, inventor and roboticist specializing in medical device design and manufacturing. His work has led to the development of multiple commercial medical treatments for depression[1][2], traumatic brain injury[3], hypertension[4][5], Sleep disorder[6][7], and more. Additionally, Douglas has also developed and co-authored patents for numerous medical technologies, including robotically steerable cathetersand autonomous treatment systems.

Douglas most recently served as the CEO, President, and Co-Chairman for Nextern Innovation[8], where he oversaw the development and launch of more than 20 FDA-approved therapeutic and diagnostic medical devices.[9]

Career

Douglas is a former partner[10][11] and board member of ReconRobotics, Inc., an advanced robotics company that has pioneered the use of tactical micro-robots for use by law enforcement and the United States Armed Forces|United States military, based on research initially funded by the DARPA|Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)[12] and the National Science Foundation[13].

During Douglas’ tenure[14], ReconRobotics became the first micro-robotics manufacturer to be awarded a U.S. government contract.[15] The United States military, including the United States Navy SEALs|Navy SEALs[16] and dozens of international forces, have utilized the company's systems in high-risk urban warfare and surveillance operations to map and clear compounds, identify Improvised explosive device|improvised explosive devices (IEDs), enemy fighters, friendly forces, and local civilians.[17] ReconRobotics models are also currently employed by more than 550 law enforcement agencies[18] around the world, including the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives|ATF, United States Department of State|State Department, and United States Marshals Service|U.S. Marshals Service.

Douglas subsequently joined Verilux, a leading manufacturer of light therapy and Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation|ultraviolet sterilization devices, as CEO[19] [20] [21] in 2009. Douglas invented multiple innovations in both fields for manufacture by Verilux, including the smallest, non-Light-emitting diode|LED device for the treatment of Seasonal affective disorder|Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)[22] and other medical conditions, as well as handheld UV-C sanitizing devices and other cleaning technologies for the neutralization of Virus|viruses, bacteria, and Bed bug|bedbug larvae.[23] Douglas' products have been regularly cited as among the best in the field by media outlets covering consumer goods, health, and technology, including The New York Times[24], The Chicago Tribune[25], Shape Magazine[26], Health.com[27], Mashable[28], Dwell[29], and have been consistently ranked among the top-selling light therapy products in North America.[30]

During his time at Verilux, Douglas also served as the CEO and President[8] [31] of multinational medical device manufacturer Nextern Innovation (formerly MFG Solutions) before assuming the role of Co-Chairman[32] in 2019. During that time, Douglas led research and co-authored multiple patents on behalf of Nextern[9] for a variety of new medical technologies, including robotically augmented therapy delivery devices, modular Bioprocessor|bio-processors[33], Cell growth|cellular growth chambers[34], and novel systems for the collection and distribution of medical data[35], among many others.
