Ronald Reuben is a Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the Founder and Executive Chair of AMD Medicom Inc., a leading global provider of infection prevention and control solutions. AMD Medicom (Medicom) has played a major role in the world’s response to public health crises, including the SARS outbreak (2003-04), the H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic (2009-10), the Avian Influenza outbreak (2014-15), the Western Africa Ebola virus epidemic (2014 -16,) and the COVID-19 pandemic. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Medicom contributed to the development of Canada’s personal protective equipment (PPE) industry in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. [7][8]

Early Life

Reuben was born in Montréal to parents who fled Iraq in search of a better life. His parents separated when he was very young, and he was raised by his mother in challenging economic circumstances. He started working at the age of fourteen while pursuing his studies. Reuben is a graduate of McGill University and attended the Harvard Business School. [9][10]

AMD Medicom

Reuben founded Medicom in 1988, while completing his university studies, in response to the HIV-AIDS crisis and the heightened demand to provide healthcare workers with PPE.[10][11][1]

Medicom began as an importer and distributor of medical gloves. In 1997, the company purchased a factory in Augusta, Georgia, and began manufacturing infection-prevention masks. Over the next decade, the company expanded globally, opening facilities in Europe and Asia to meet the growing demand for safety and infection control in healthcare. By 2008, Medicom had 400 employees. It continued to grow, expanding to serve the dental, medical, lab and research, veterinary, and health and wellness markets. Today, the company is a global manufacturer of infection prevention and control and PPE solutions, including surgical and N95 respiratory masks, with plants and offices in 15 countries in North America, Europe and Asia, nearly 2000 employees, and over $1 billion in annual sales in ninety-five countries.[12][13]

COVID-19 Response

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Medicom entered into long-term PPE supply contracts with the governments of Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]

In April 2020, Medicom received a mandate from the Canadian government to build a mask-masking facility in Montréal. [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]

In 2021, the Canadian government agreed to provide about $29 million to Medicom to build a $39-million facility in Montréal dedicated to the production of the inner filter material used in the production of surgical, pediatric and N95-type respiratory masks. [30][31]

In May 2022, Medicom received a mandate to build the first manufacturing facility for nitrile gloves outside of Asia. [32][33]

Awards

In 2013, Reuben received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Health Sciences category for Quebec. [34]

In 2021, Canadian Business Magazine named Medicom one of the best managed companies in Canada. [35]

In 2021, Medicom received the Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton Entrepreneurship – Large Company – Award at the 2021 Mercuriades Gala. [36]

In 2023, Reuben was awarded a Médaille de l'Assemblée nationale du Québec by Québec MNA Gregory Kelley, for carrying-out an exemplary action of benefit to the community of the Jacques-Cartier riding. [37][38]

Reuben sits on the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Society Canada. [39]
