Rodney Derek Thornhill was born on 24th January 1942 in Reading in Berkshire and after coming through the ranks of the Reading FC 'A' Team and Reserve side, he achieved his childhood dream of playing for the Reading FC first team in the first match of the 1963-64 Football League Division 3 season.
Rod went on to make 222 appearances for Reading F.C., scoring 23 goals.[1] He played in every position, apart from goalkeeper, although his usual position was left half.
His career included a run of 83 successive matches in the first team and 4 goals scored in the first 29 minutes of a Football League Division 3 league match against Watford FC on 26th September 1964.[2]
Rod turned down offers from other clubs during his career, notably Watford FC who twice wanted to sign him, but he only wanted to play for his home town club.
Rod's professional career was effectively finished in the Football League 1969-70 season having sustained a detached retina injury in a league match against Gillingham FC.
Rod was released by Reading FC in 1970 and he joined Southern Football League side Poole Town FC, where he played for two season before retiring from Football.
Rod was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 2020.
