Riya Mukherjee (born Delhi, 9 January 1975) is a podcaster, screenplay writer, lyricist and radio professional. She has her own company Riya Mukherjee Word Pictures.[1] She hosts Riya's Retro, a Hindi film retro show on gaana.com[2] and has written and produced the short film The Disguise.[3] She has also written Hindi lyrics for the RRR soundtrack as well as the hindi dialogues for the film.[4] She was the creative head of national radio brand Radio Mirchi 98.3FM for several years.[5]

Early life

Riya was born in Delhi to Bengali parents. She did her schooling at Mothers International School and attended Hindu College, University of Delhi graduating with a degree in literature in the 1990s.

Radio

In 1995 Mukherjee joined the Times of India owned private FM radio station Times FM where she worked as a producer and RJ. In 2001 the Times group launched Radio Mirchi, a 24-hour FM station, Riya headed the Delhi radio station and then assumed the role of national creative head of the entire network.[6]

Podcasts

In 2016 Riya began a theme-based podcast on Hindi film classic songs called Riya's Retro, the podcast remained in the Gaana top 5 for all its seasons. The show mixes old Hindi film songs with information, trivia and musings about life. As content head for music app gaana.com Riya introduced several new shows to the platform including The Unheard hosted by Shankar Mahadevan and The Asha Verdict where Asha Bhosle reviewed new music.[7]

Mukherjee has also produced podcasts like Shudh Desi Gay, a podcast about being gay in India[8] and Spot Dada, the fictional story of Bollywood extra who had aspirations of being a hero in his youth.[9] She is also one of the mentors for Sound Up,[10] an initiative by global music streaming app Spotify for increasing the number of women in India's podcast landscape.[11]

Riya also adapted Rabindranath Tagore's famous stories and poems to contemporary Indian settings and narrated them in a series called Rockstar Rabindranth.[12]

Lyrics

In 2015 Riya Mukherjee wrote the lyrics for Sanjoy Nag's film Good Morning Sunshine, the music was composed by M.M. Keeravani.[13] A few years later Mukherjee wrote the Hindi lyrics for another Keeravani composition, Dosti, the first song release for the blockbuster S. Rajamouli release RRR and Naacho Naacho, another RRR hit.[14]

Films

She wrote and produced The Disguise, a short film on cultural intolerance, stereotyping and islamophobia.[15] 18 minutes long The Disguise was directed by Sandeep A. Verma and won 8 awards Southern Shorts awards. Mukherjee, herself won awards for best film and screenwriting.[16]
