Rita Payés Roma (born 26 September 1999)[1] is a Catalan Spanish jazz and bossa nova composer, trombonist and singer.

Early life and education

Payés was born 26 September 1999 in Vilassar de Mar to a musical family with her mother, Elizabeth Roma, a trained classic guitarist and her father and brother trumpeters.[2]

Payés began formally studying music at the IEA Oriol Martorell school, an arts-focused high school. Her primary instrument is the trombone.[3]

Career

At the age of thirteen Payés joined the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, directed by Joan Chamorro where she began singing alongside Andrea Motis, Magalí Datzira, and Eva Fernandez.[4] At fifteen, she released her first album.[3]

In 2019, Payés released Imagina, in collaboration with her mother.[4] The two went on tour to promote the album in Europe.[5][6]

In alliance with Italian pianist Massimo Faraò, Payés in 2019 released two VHCDs: My Ideal (Venus Records) starring Scott Hamilton,[7] and In New York, recorded in New York.[8]

On April 16, 2021, Payés released her album Como la piel in another cooperation with her mother, Roma, and her partner, Pol Batlle.[9] The album made NPR Music's best Latin album in 2021.[10] The track Nunca vas a comprender, an original composition, was an NPR Music's staff pick which described her voice as angelic and stated the track "transports the listener to grassy meadows and lengthy sobremesas".[11]

Two months later, she was given the 2021 Alícia prize for emerging talent, awarded by the Acadèmia Catalana de la Música.[12]

At the 36th Goya Awards in Valencia 2022, Payés performed Te venero with C. Tangana in a live TV broadcast by Radiotelevisión Española.[13] About her performance Madrid's El Independiente wrote, "The deep voice of the young Catalan managed to eclipse the famous presence of C. Tangana".[3] Cosmopolitan wrote the duo "has already gone down in the history of the film ceremony". [14]

Subsequently, Payés and Batlle were invited to ColorsxStudio, Berlin, Germany for A COLORS SHOW recording of their new single Vida (Lluís Llach).[15]

Personal life

In December 2021, Payés announced that she had given birth to a girl named Juna.[16]
