Resplendent Ceylon

Resplendent Ceylon is a collection of three boutique luxury resorts in Sri Lanka founded by the Fernando family, Sri Lankan tea producers and founders of Dilmah Tea.[1] The three properties, Ceylon Tea Trails, Cape Weligama and Wild Coast Tented Lodge are the sole Sri Lankan members of Relais & Chateaux.[2]

History

Dilmah Tea, Resplendent Ceylon’s parent company, was established in 1988.[1] Resplendent Ceylon is founded by Merrill J. Fernando and his two sons, Dilhan and Malik[1][3]. The brand’s first property was Ceylon Tea Trails and subsequently launched Cape Weligama in 2014, and Wild Coast Tented Lodge followed in 2017.

Properties

Ceylon Tea Trails is a collection of five[4] tea-planters’ bungalows in the Hatton region of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands.

Cape Weligama is a luxury resort[5] located above Weligama Bay. The resort is designed by Asian architect Lek Bunnag[6].

Wild Coast Tented Lodge is a luxury tented camp situated near of Yala National Park, known for its leopard populations. The camp’s design by Nomadic Resorts consists of 36 tented villas[7].

Recognition & Awards

All three properties have been listed in the TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Awards.[8][9][10] In 2015, Tea Trails was added to the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame[11] and was named in the Tatler Travel Guide in 2018[12]. In 2018, Tea Trails won the ‘Savoir Faire’ Trophy at the Relais & Chateaux Awards, commending the hotel for its excellence in service.[13]

In 2014, Cape Weligama was named in the Conde Nast Traveller 2015 Host List, Travel + Leisure 2015 list.[14] In 2016, it was shortlisted by Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Awards in 2016 for Best Hotel Pool.[15]

Wild Coast Tented Lodge was recognised in the Conde Nast Traveller 2018 Hot List[16] Harper’s Bazaar 2018 Travel Guide[17] and 2019 Tatler Travel Guide.[18] The property was shortlisted for Hospitality Building of the Year at the 2019 Dezeen Awards[19] and won the Best Resort Design category at the 2019 AHEAD Asia Awards.[20]

All three properties were named in the Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards in 2020.[21]
