Razaq Obe (born February 17, 1976) is a Nigerian technocrat and public servant. He currently serves as the Commissioner for Energy and Mines in Ondo State.[1] He has served in companies such as Globacom, NNPC, and Exxon Mobil (Upstream Nigeria).
Early Life and Education
Razaq Obe was born on February 17, 1976, in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State. He pursued a degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Benin from 1998 to 2003. He actively participated in campus politics and led several movements against the imposition of unfavorable conditions that hindered students' welfare and academic pursuits. He also served as the president of the Nigerian University Engineering Students Association (NUESA) and held positions in the student's union parliament and the university Congress of the Masses. In 2012, he furthered his education at the University of Liverpool, obtaining an MSc in Oil and Gas Project Management. Additionally, Obe completed the Accredited Mediator program at the London School of Mediation in 2019.
Career
Obe's professional journey spans over a decade and encompasses roles in esteemed organizations. He began his career in 2007 as a Management Executive at Globacom, a prominent Nigerian telecommunications company.[1] Subsequently, he completed his mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Gas Company in Warri, a subsidiary of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Obe's competence and expertise led him to join Exxon Mobil (Upstream Nigeria), where he held the position of Operations Procurement Contract Manager until his recent retirement. During his time at Exxon Mobil, he was appointed as a board member of the ExxonMobil Employees Savings and Pensions Funds, contributing to the management and oversight of the fund.[2] Obe's contributions extend beyond his corporate endeavors. He served as the Chairman of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and acted as a board member for the N350B ExxonMobil ESP and Pension Funds.[3] Furthermore, he played an instrumental role as a member of the Ministerial Committee on Contract Staffing in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. The committee, chaired by the Nigerian Minister of State for Labor and Productivity, aimed to address pertinent issues within the sector.
Politics
Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN, appointed Razaq Obe as the Commissioner for Energy and Mines in 2020.[4] In this role, Obe is responsible for overseeing the energy and mining sectors, contributing to the development and strategic planning of these industries within Ondo State.[5]
