At its 23 sites in Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, Florida, Wisconsin, and Kansas, it confers associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. Additionally, it makes many of its programmes available completely online. The procedure to acquire Rasmussen was initiated by American Public Education, Inc. in October of the year 2020.

Classes leading to Bachelor of Science (BS), Associate of Applied Science (AAS), and Associate of Science (AS) degrees in career-focused fields are available both on-campus and online via the Rasmussen College education platform. In addition to that, a wide range of certifications and degrees are available.

In the year 1900, Walter Rasmussen established the school in Stillwater, Minnesota. At the time, it was known as the Rasmussen Practical School of Business. Rasmussen was of the opinion that the demands of the regional business community for qualified professionals were not being adequately satisfied. The Nineteenth Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States, was ratified in 1920. This led to a rise in the number of female students attending the institution. In 1945, Walter Rasmussen stepped down as director of the institution and handed the reins over to his successor, Walter Nemitz. Since his arrival at the institution in 1934, Nemitz served as its director, during which time he oversaw the development of a variety of new academic programmes. By the year 1950, the institution had awarded diplomas to more than 22,400 former students. In 1961, Wilbur Nemitz and Robert Nemitz, two of Walter's sons, purchased the institution from their father. The St. Cloud Business College was purchased by Rasmussen College in 1974, and the Northern Technical School of Business was purchased by Rasmussen College in 1979. The establishment of a campus in the city of Mankato, Minnesota, took place in the year 1983.

The Higher Learning Commission conferred its accreditation for Rasmussen College in the year 2001.

In the year 2002, Rasmussen College launched its online campus. The college amalgamated the activities of Aakers College in North Dakota and Webster College in Florida after acquiring both of those institutions. Rasmussen College is located in North Dakota. At this time, the institution has produced more than 100,000 graduates.

2010 saw the announcement of a cooperation between Rasmussen College and Market Motive Inc., as well as the launch of new Internet marketing degree programmes.

In 2018, Renovus Capital became the new owner of Rasmussen.

In October of 2020, Rasmussen College was transitioned into Rasmussen University.
