Rabbi Dovid Kronglass was a prominent Talmudic scholar and Mussar personality who served as the Mashgiach ruchani and as a Maggid Shiur in Yeshivas Ner Yisroel of Baltimore, Maryland.

Early Life

Kronglass was born in 1910 in Kobryn, Belarus, and was orphaned at a young age.[1] He went to study in Mir Yeshiva (Belarus), located in Mir, Belarus, and became a close disciple of Yeruchom Levovitz|Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz, the Mashgiach of the Yeshiva, who helped mold Kronglass into a Mussar personality.[2] The leadership of the Yeshiva noticed Kronglass' ability to relate to all types of students, and he was given the task of overseeing the development of the students who hailed from Germany and the United States. As a result, Kronglass became acquainted with a student named Herman N. Neuberger who eventually joined the leadership of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel of Baltimore and was responsible for bringing Kronglass to join the Yeshiva.

In the Mirrer Yeshiva, Kronglass was recognized as integrating many traits that are not commonly found in one person. Thus, he was known as a Lamdan, Masmid (non-stop study of Torah), Mussar personality, and a Posek.[3]

During World War II, Kronglass fled with the Yeshiva to Shanghai, China, where he remained until the end of the war.

Career

After World War II, Kronglass joined the staff of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel, where he was known fondly by his students as "Reb Dovid". Initially, he was invited to just be the Mashgiach Ruchani, but he asked Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman, the Rosh yeshiva, if he can also be a Maggid Shiur, since he felt that he would be more successful in his role as Mashgiach Ruchani if he also had their respect as a Talmudic scholar who is a Maggid Shiur. He also served as the Posek of the Yeshiva.

Works

Divrei Dovid[4] - Talmudic Chidush|novellae on Zeraim|Seder Zeraim. This work was primarily written during the years 1943-1945 while he was studying in the Mir Yeshiva in Shanghai.

Death

Kronglass died on Saturday, December 16, 1972 (11 Teves, 5733), after a brief illness. He is buried in the Shomrei Mishmeres cemetery in Rosedale, Maryland.[5] Every year on his Yartzeit, a shiur is delivered in Ner Yisroel based on his Talmudic discourses.[6]
