Piumi Hansamali (born 22 November 1992 as පියුමි හංසමාලි), is an actress in Sri Lankan cinema[1] and television as well as a beauty pageant contestant and a model.[2][3][4] Started as a model, she later became very popular with the television serial Rithu and films Wassanaye Sanda[5][6] and Lucknow.[7]

Personal life

Hansamali was born on 22 November 1992 in Colombo as the only child of the family.[8] Her father is Nihal Lakshman Gomez and mother is Wasanthi Perera both worked abroad. She completed education from Sri Sobitha Vidyalaya, Rajagiriya.[9]

She was married and is a mother of a son.[10][11]

Career

In 2011, she joined with Side Images Modeling School conducted by Rozanne Diasz where she started modeling career from Ramp Modelling.[12] In 2015, she participated in Mrs Globe and then in 2016, contested in Mrs. Noble Queen of the Universe held in Malaysia.[13][9][14] In 2017, she contested for the Best Model in Asia in Future Fashion Faces World held in Turkey.[15][16][17][18] In 2014, Hansamali made her maiden television appearance with the television serial Rithu telecast in ITN directed by Shantha Soyza. In the serial, she played the lead titular role opposite to popular actor Vishwa Kodikara.[9] Even though the serial started to receive popularity, it was cancelled in the beginning of 2015 due to political pressure.[19]

Then in 2018, she made her maiden cinematic appearance with the drama film Wassanaye Sanda[20] directed by Udayakantha Warnasuriya.[11][21][22][23] In the film, she made the lead character of 'Mihiri'.[24][25] In 2019, she was invited to act in Malayalam cinema Lucknow directed by Anil Kumar.[26][27] In the film, she made the lead role along with fellow Sri Lankan dramatist Jackson Anthony.[28][29] This is the second time that a Sri Lankan actress has been in such a position since Yashoda Wimaladharma played the lead role in an Indian film in 1992.[30][31]

Apart from acting, she also worked as a television presenter in the musical program Music Live from 2014 to 2016. She also appeared in several television commercials including, "Sunlight", "TVS Bikes", "Fortune Cooking Oil" and Hacks".[32]
