The art of teaching others to play the piano is the subject of study known as "piano pedagogy." Piano pedagogy places an emphasis on the individual instruction of musical skills to piano students, in contrast to the professional discipline of music education, which is concerned with the instruction of music in school classrooms or other group settings. Lessons on the piano, often known as private or semi-private tuition, are typically how this is accomplished. Piano pedagogues, or simply piano instructors, are the individuals who instruct students on how to play the piano.

Undoubtedly, there is a broad spectrum of professional expertise among piano instructors. James Bastien, a pedagogue for the piano and author of a number of works on the subject of education, cautioned that "competent training is not necessarily insured by the number of years one has taken lessons."
