Philipp Hochmair (born 1973) is an Austrian theater, film and television actor. He has played in all the well-known major theaters in the German-speaking parts. He gained greater fame through his participation in the TV series Vorstadtweiber and Freud (TV series). He tours around the world with his own theater productions.

Early life

Philipp Hochmair grew up in Vienna, Austria, where he discovered his passion for literature, film and theater. His mother is a physician who was frequently the on-call doctor for theaters. Therefore he experienced theater and opera performances from an early age.

After graduating from high school, he studied acting at the famous Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Paris. Chosen by Golden Globe Awards Winner Klaus Maria Brandauer to join his master class, he graduaded from acting school after 4 years. Brandauer and Hochmair subsequently became friends after starring together as father and son in the Alzheimer drama The Extinction (Die Auslöschung) by Nikolaus Leytner in 2012[1][2]

Career

Theater

He experienced theater and opera from an early age on. That's why he discovered his passion for arts. From 2003 to 2009 he was engaged at the Viennese Burgtheater (admitted in the gallery of honor)[3]. When he left the Burgtheater in 2009, he worked at the Thalia Theater (Hamburg) until 2016[4]. Apart from this, he had engagements at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Staatstheater Hannover, Volksbühne Berlin and at the Schauspielhaus Zürich.

Movies & TV

Starring in numerous movies and TV-films, including Die Manns – Ein Jahrhundertroman[5] (directed by Heinrich Breloer: 30th International Emmy Awards), Winter Journey (2006 film) (director Hans Steinbichler), Day and Night (directed by Sabine Derflinger), The Fatherless (directed by Marie Kreutzer) and The Shine of the Day (by Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel), Die Auslöschung (director: Nicholas Leytner), Tomcat (2016 film)[6] (by Klaus Händl) and Animals (2017 film) (directed by Greg Zglinksi)[7]

Hochmair has played significant roles in many Austrian and German television series. In the popular series Vorstadtweiber, he embodies a corrupt and cynical homosexual politician, who loses his mind and becomes a murderer.[8]

In the Netflix-Series Freud (TV series)|Freud (2019), he plays an evil count, obsessed by dark powers.[9]

In the third season of Charité (TV series) (German-Netflix-Production, 2020), Hochmair stars as Professor Otto Prokop, an Austrian forensic pathologist who was internationally recognized for his influence on forensic medicine and research policy during German Democratic Republic.[10]

Blind ermittelt (2017–2021) centers around Hochmair's character Alexander Haller, a blind ex-commissioner.[11]

Candelaria is one of his first international productions, directed by Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza. Shot in Cuba in 2016.[12][13]

Die Wannseekonferenz (2022)|Die Wannseekonferenz (2022, directed by Matti Geschonneck) [14][15][16][17]: On January 20, 1942, leading representatives of the Nazi regime meet al Wannsee in Berlin at the invitation of Reinhard Heydrich (Philipp Hochmair). The meeting will go down in history as the Wannsee Conference. The sole topic of discussion is the so-called "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" by the National Socialists: the organization of the systematic mass murder of the Jews of Europe by the millions.

His projects

Hochmair tours nationally and internationally with his solo projects Werther! (by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe|Goethe)[18], The Trial and America (both by Franz Kafka).[19]

Jedermann Reloaded is Philipp Hochmair's rock-interpretation of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's original play Jedermann (play)|Jedermann, which he performs together with his band Die Elektrohand Gottes on stage. This every exceptional performance has attracted lots of attention, because Hochmair rocks this one man show by taking on more than 20 roles by himself. With his band, he has also set ballads by Friedrich Schiller to music in a rock style, which he thereby wants to bring to life in a new way.[20]

In November 2018, Philipp Hochmair and his band, Die Elektrohand Gottes, performed Hochmair's rock spectacle Jedermann Reloaded at the Viennese St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna|St. Stephens Cathedral. All proceeds of this sold out charity went to a South African aids hospice.[21]

In November 2018, Jedermann Reloaded was released on CD, LP, iTunes and Spotify and in October 2021 the Schiller Balladen Rave.[22]

Awards

In 2017, Hochmair won the Diagonale Festival Award in Graz for his performance in Tomcat (2016 film)|Tomcat.[23]

In 2019, he won the Austrian Television Award ROMY for his role Alexander Haller, the blind ex-commissioner in Blind ermittelt.[24]
