Peter Miller (born 1978) is an artist known for using film and photography to explore the medium’s components: light, audience, process, and the effects of flicker, optics, and perspective.[1] [2]

Early life

Miller was born April 4, 1978 in Burlington, Vermont, in the United States. He attended Burlington High School, graduating in 1996. Studying Film & Photography, Miller graduated from Hampshire College in 2000. Taking up study at the Chicago Art Institute he received his Masters of Fine Arts degree for Studio Art. He has been living for more than a decade in Europe, primarily working and teaching in Germany and France. Early in his career Miller studied with experimental film makers Peter Tscherkassky (Vienna) and Matthias Müller (Cologne) supported by Fulbright and DAAD grants. [1] [2] [3]

Career

Miller began creating films and screening at festivals such as the Berlinale [2], Viennale [4] and the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) [5]. As the artist continued to develop his craft, he was captivated by the idea of making the invisible visible which is a notable theme in many of his works. To express this concept Miller created experimental exposure processes for both film and light sensitive media which enables him and the viewer to examine the methods for visualizing and recording marks created by objects, events, and living creatures. [6] [7] Miller's exposure from international film festivals and through gallery shows led to the acquisition of his works by public collections such as the Center Pompidou, Paris, France [8]. He has exhibited work at globally recognized institutions such as SF MoMA [9], notable international events such as the 57th Venice Biennale [10], and the Palais de Tokyo [11]. Miller is a professor for photography and time-based media at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany [12]. His films are distributed by Light Cone in Paris and Arsenal in Berlin. Miller is represented by Gallery Crone [13] in Berlin.
