Joffrey Zamora Atienza (born April 23, 1990[1]), known professionally as Pepot Atienza or Pepot, is a Filipino illustrator for children's books.[2] He is best known for his book Malong the Magic Cloth, first published in 2016.[3]
Early Life
In Quezon Province in the Philippines, Pepot was born to Filipino parents. They encouraged him to draw, with him learning early on what he would like to be. [4]
Education and Career
After graduating from the University of Santo Tomas with a Fine Arts major in Advertising degree, Atienza discovered “3D illustrations.” Citing the works of artists Jim McKenzie and Chris Sickels as inspirations, he began his career as a motion graphics designer and animator at ABS-CBN [5] before becoming an illustrator. He uses mixed media but is also well-known for using clay. [6] He is noted for illustrating in books that promote inclusivity and diversity, such as in "My Mother The Driver", which features a female driver of a Philippine jeep, standard local commute, which is typically a male-dominated field. [7] Pepot is also a member of the "Ang Illustrador ng Kabataan" (The Children's Illustrators) and local group "Lucban Artists' Guild". The book "Malong, the Magic Cloth" in which he used clay sculptures, was launched internationally in Singapore.[8][9] He was selected to illustrate and localize the Philippine version of "Read a Book With Me" by author Lawrence Schimel with the book being retitled into Puwede Po Ba Tayo Magbasa ng Aklat? (Would You Read a Book with Me?)
