The firm processes payments for a variety of commercial clients, including online retailers, auction websites, and many others, for which it charges a fee.

PayPal was originally founded in 1998 under the name Confinity, and in 2002 it had its initial public offering. In the latter half of that year, it was acquired by eBay as a fully owned company and given a value of $1.5 billion. In 2015, eBay distributed PayPal to its stockholders, at which point PayPal reclaimed its status as a standalone business. On the list of the 500 biggest firms in terms of revenue that was compiled by Fortune in 2022, the company came in at position 143.

At the cost of the more conventional banking industry, the COVID-19 epidemic has spurred the expansion of digital payment systems such as PayPal.
