Paolo Franchetti was born in Arzignano (Vicenza, Italy) on August 20, 1973. He is a civil structural engineer and founder, technical director and legal representative of Franchetti S.p.A., a multinational software development and engineering design company for predictive maintenance of bridges and viaducts. He is also founder and partner, since 2014, of Franchetti & Merola Engenharia Ltda, a subsidiary of Franchetti SpA based in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)[1]. He is a member of the Study Commission for the Port of Venice and the Commission for the Evaluation of Maritime Traffic of the Giudecca Canal. He is a regular associate professor of Structural engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Padua and is a member and lecturer of the International Road Federation, an international non-profit organization representing companies in the road infrastructure and mobility sectors[2].

Education and studies

He graduated at Liceo classico statale A. Pigafetta in Vicenza in 1992, while in 1999 he graduated in Civil engineering at the University of Padua, with a thesis in structural economics entitled: "Large span suspension bridges: description of construction systems and analysis of aeroelastic instability. The case of the Great Belt East Bridge". In 2003 he obtained his PhD in design, conservation and control of structures at the University of Trento, in consortium with the Universities of Brescia, Padua, Trieste and the University Institute of Architecture of Venice, with a thesis entitled: "Vibration-based damage assessment of pre-cast elements"[3][4].

Academic career

From 2000 to 2012 he has been regular professor of Dynamics of Structures at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Padova. He is Visiting Professor at the CEE (Civil and environmental engineering) department of the University of California, Irvine, California (UCI), where he holds courses on the study of seismic vulnerability of road networks and infrastructures. Since the academic year 2008-2009 he is coordinator and teacher of the SA3 module (Seismic behavior and structural dynamics) of the European Master for Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historic Buildings, funded by Erasmus+. He is a regular associate professor of Technique of Constructions at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Padua, where he is also contract professor in the course of Design of structures for environmental protection for the Master Degree in Environmental Engineering since the academic year 2010-2011. He is lecturer of the Construction Technique course at the École Nationale superieure des travaux publics (ENSTP) in Yaoundé, Cameroon[5][6].

Scientific activity

He is author of more than 70 publications, also in journals, related to structural mechanics in general, structural monitoring, dynamic identification and earthquake engineering. Evaluation of the safety of existing structures, in particular of historical buildings, bridges and viaducts, of the response to seismic movements and of innovative techniques for seismic adaptation and to prevent damage to structures in operation are the topics covered. He participates in the activities of international associations and research groups operating in the field of structural engineering both nationally and internationally, often on the basis of coordinated projects that enjoy funding from the European Union[7].
