A technical director (TD) is often a senior technical person working for a corporation such as a software company, engineering firm, film studio, theatre company, or television studio, among other places of employment. This individual often has the greatest degree of expertise in a particular technological subject.

In software development, a technical director is typically responsible for the successful creation and delivery of the company's product to the marketplace by managing technical risks and opportunities; collaborating with the development teams on key software design and implementation decisions; scheduling tasks, including tracking dependencies, managing change requests, and ensuring the quality of deliveries; and educating the team on technical best practises and procedures.
