OpenCities is a web development business headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, which specializes in providing "website and digital services for governments".[1]

The company was founded in 2008 by Alex Gelbak and Leon Gelbak.[2][3]

OpenCities has designed and built over 500 websites for local governments in Australia, New Zealand and the United States.[4] Localities that have hired the firm include:

In 2017, OpenCities won the 2017 San Francisco Design Awards for its redesign of the City of Grand Rapids website.[10] In 2019, OpenCities ranked 15th in the Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) Haverford Awards for its work in developing websites for local government.[11]

National Benchmarking Report

Every year OpenCities conducts a national survey in the United States to compile the National Benchmarking Report, which assesses every U.S. city with a population of more than 10,000 residents.[12]

In 2016, the study found that "that 32 percent have poor optimization for mobile or tablet devices; 87 percent received a failing grade for encryption; 40 percent failed accessibility tests, and fewer than 9 percent are written at a reading level that average Americans can comfortably grasp".[13]
