The Indo-Aryan language known as Odia is the official language of the state of Odisha in India. It is also spoken in some regions of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, in addition to being the official language of the state of Odisha, which was once known as Orissa. Native speakers account for 82 percent of the population of Odisha. Odia is recognised as one of the official languages of India and has the position of official language in the state of Odisha. In Jharkhand, it holds the position of second official language. In addition, there is a substantial community of at least one million individuals who are fluent in the language in the state of Chhattisgarh.

The criteria for designating a language as a Classical language include having a significant literary tradition and not having borrowed heavily from other languages. Odia is the sixth Indian language to be given this designation. The oldest inscription at Odia that has been discovered goes back to the 10th century after Christ.
