Nosrat-ol-Molok Kashanchi (1912-1990) was an Iranian medical doctor. She was one of the first ten women in Iran who were admitted to medical school and received medical degrees,[1][2] and the country's first female legal Medical Examiner in Iran.[3]
Birth and Family
Kashanchi was born in 1912 in Tehran, Iran. Her father was bazaar businessman Alinaghi Kashanchi. According to the customs of the time, she was betrothed and later married her cousin at the age of 14 after completing her primary education. The marriage did not last long and she divorced her husband. Together with her son, they returned to her father’s house in Tehran. She never remarried.[4]
Higher Education
Following high school she completed the midwifery program at University of Tehran and consequently went to Berlin, Germany to continue her medical education in early 1939. With the advent of the Second World War she returned to Tehran and was admitted to the Tehran University Medical School among the first ten female medical students in Iran. She was then accepted to the Obstetrician / Gynecology program at the university of Paris, France, returning to Iran in 1952.[1][5]
Professional Career
Upon her return from France, Kashanchi opened a clinic specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in one of her father’s properties and spearheaded the construction of a fully equipped hospital in an impoverished section of the southern Tehran with the help of her father and other major figures in the business community. The hospital was named BAZARGANAN and situated in Ray Street, Tehran which still exists to this day.[4]
She was also at the time employed by the Ministry of Justice (Iran) (Office of Medical Examiner). She was the founder of the Women Section at the office of Medical Examiner and was also given the task of overseeing the construction of Justice Ministry Hospital.[1][6]
