Nir Avishai Cohen (born 1981) is an Israeli major of the IDF reserve.[1] and former spokesperson of the NGO Breaking the Silence [2]. He is known for his criticism of the military presence of IDF in the West Bank.

Biography

Cohen was born in 1981 in Almagor, a village in northern Israel near the Sea of Galilee. His grandmother survived the German Holocaust at Auschwitz concentration camp [1]. After school, Cohen joined the Israeli military IDF and served for four years, at times as an officer, in the Golani combat unit [3]. Afterwards, Cohen joined the IDF Reserves and became a major[1].

In 2019, Cohen was one of the leaders of the Forum for Jewish-Arab Cooperation within the party Meretz, which worked on transitioning the party towards a Jewish-Arab party. In this time, Cohen also worked as parliamentary aide for Knesset member Issawi Frej [4]. Later in 2019, Cohen became spokesperson of the NGO Breaking the Silence.

In 2020, Cohen joined the 10th season of Israeli Big Brother where he faced Oren Hazan, a right-wing politician and Knesset member. Cohen argued that Big Brother was a platform to reach Israelis with his messages outside his typical audience [3].

In 2023, Cohen wrote the book Love Israel, support Palestine: An Israeli story – an autobiography of his time in the IDF and his civilian work [1].

After the October 7 attacks, Cohen again joined the IDF reserves.
