The primary campus of New Mexico State University, often known as NMSU or NM State, is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in the United States. NMSU and NM State are both public land-grant research universities. The New Mexico State University is the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of New Mexico. It was established on September 17, 1888. A total of 21,874 students were enrolled across all campuses as of the end of the 2017 academic year. The university has branch campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doa Ana County, and Grants, in addition to extension and research facilities located across the state of New Mexico.

It was first known as the Las Cruces College when it was established in 1888; the following year, it changed its name to the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and was classified as a Land Grant college. It wasn't until 1960 that it was given its current name. As of the Fall 2017 semester, New Mexico State University had a total enrollment of 24,580 students and a faculty-to-student ratio of around 1 to 16. Through its main campus and four community colleges, New Mexico State University (NMSU) provides a diverse selection of academic programmes and confers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. There are a total of 96 baccalaureate majors, 58 master's degree programmes, and 28 doctorate degree programmes available at New Mexico State University,

With the exception of football, all of New Mexico State's other sports teams compete at the Division I level of the NCAA and are members of the Western Athletic Conference.

Las Cruces, which is located in New Mexico, is home to the primary campus of New Mexico State University, which encompasses a total area of 900 acres (360 hectares). It is situated next to Interstate 25, in the middle of a desert terrain, and it is surrounded by greenhouses. The primary campus is also bounded on two sides by Interstate 10, which is the principal east–west interstate route that spans the entirety of the southern region of the United States. The New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum is located on the west slope of the "A" Mountain to the east of Interstate 25. Other campus amenities include the President's house, the NMSU Golf Course, and the "A" Mountain west slope. Pan American Plaza, a horse farm that spans 48 acres, and the Fabian Garcia Science centre can be found to the south of University Avenue. The science centre is home to the Chile Pepper Institute's research, teaching, and demonstration garden, as well as equipment for the study of algal biofuels, grape vineyards, and gazebos, as well as fields and greenhouses for the study of plant research projects. The Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center can be found around six miles south of the main campus and has 203 acres of land.
