The New Ideas Chamber Orchestra NICO is a Lithuanian string ensemble based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Described as 'modern classical music equivalent of rock stars',[1] the ensemble focuses on performing contemporary minimal music, especially music created by its founder, conductor and artistic director Gediminas Gelgotas. NICO performances involve mixing classical and pop idioms with non-traditional string instrument techniques, playing from memory and minimalistic choreography.
History
NICO was established in 2006 by the Lithuanian minimal music composer Gediminas Gelgotas. The first concert took place in Vilnius, Lithuania on October 6, 2006.
New Ideas Chamber Orchestra has performed in prestigious concert halls across Europe, Asia and North America, including Leipzig Gewandhaus, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Roundhouse and others. Memorable perfomances include a private concert for his Holiness Dalai Lama and a widely broadcasted performance for Pope Francis]].[2]
NICO collaborates with renowned musicians Mari Samuelsen, Kristjan Järvi, Ole Edvard Antonsen, David Geringas, Roman Patkolo, Kirill Troussov, David Nebel, Vytautas Sondeckis, Asmik Grigorian, Sylvia Schwartz, Voces8 among others.
NICO has received attention by the international press. Classic FM radio station have broadcasted NICO live from their studios, whilst BBC World Service named NICO "trully worth attention" during a 10-minute special on Gediminas Gelgotas and his ensemble.

NICO also plays works by Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Philip Glass, John Tavener, Arvo Pärt, Morten Lauridsen, Max Richter and Peter Michael Hamel, and incorporates some of their own transcriptions of traditional composers (Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi etc.) into the performances.
