Nedko Solakov (28 December 1957) is a Bulgarian artist. His work consists of Drawing, Painting, performance art and Installation art. He lives and works in Sofia.[1]

Biography

He graduated in mural painting from the National Academy of Arts, Sofia, in 1981. In 1985 and 1986 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp).[2] He received several grants in the 1990s to produce artworks in Zürich, Vienna, Berlin, Stockholm and Kitakyushu.

His first solo exhibition was in 1981 in the gallery "Rakovski 108" in Sofia, and his first exhibition outside Bulgaria was in Villa Merkel in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany.

Between 1990 and 2010 Solakov participated regularly in important exhibitions, such as documenta 12 (2007) and Documenta (13), the Venice Biennale (1993, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2007), the Moscow Biennale (2007) and the Istanbul Biennial (1992, 1995 and 2005). For his last participation in the Venice Biennale, he received an honorable mention from the jury. His activity in these exhibitions has made him ineternationally one of the best known Bulgarian artists of his generation.[1]

Work

Solakov's work contains multiple New media art, often combined in spatial installations. Solakov uses video art, Drawing, painting and digital art. He often uses an ironic and metaphorical style to analyse the role, position and the contradictions of the artist and his work in contemporary society. A technique he often uses are small handwritten notes or drawings on the walls of exhibition spaces.[3] He uses them often to comment on the immediate environment, the art institution or to press certain experiences and feelings he had during the making of the work.[4] Solakov uses drawings and other art forms such as to tell stories; these stories are not linear but multi-directional. Solakov is sometimes described as a Conceptual art|conceptual or post-conceptual artists: his conceptual approach is based on narrative, staged in absurd and funny stories.[5][6]
