Nate Wilbourne is a New Zealand Environmentalist, Activist, Speaker and Photographer (born 2008). Wilbourne has worked for Environmental Organisations since 2020, working on both regional and national levels. Wilbourne is recognised for his contribution to his local community as a conservationist.[1]

Personal/Early Life

Wilbourne was born in Nelson 2008. He grew up in a rural background, in the suburb of Brightwater, where he attended the local primary school, and is a current student at Garin College where he is the Enviroschools Captain[2]. At age 8, Wilbourne's journey started when he planted his first tree. At age 11, Wilbourne declared his house 'Pest Free.'[1][3]

In 2022, at 14 years old Wilbourne was a keynote speaker at TEDxNelson[4] who gave a TEDx talk titled 'The Power Of Connecting Young People To Nature.'[5]

Work for the Environment, Climate, and Community

Environment

Wilbourne was involved with the translocation of Fluttering Shearwater to the Wharariki Eco-Sanctuary, which is apart of the plan to translocate a total of 250 Fluttering Shearwater to the sanctuary.[6] The translocations of Fluttering Shearwater to the Wharariki Eco-Sanctuary is a part of HealthPost Nature Trust's mission to 'create a wondrous nature sanctuary at the northern-most point of the south island.'[7]

Around the same time, Wilbourne set up a 'youth hub' in his local area, to get young people involved in conservation with a New Zealand conservation organisation, Forest & Bird. The hub now has over 30 youth supporting the hub.[8][3]

In April 2023, Wilbourne attended BLAKE Inspire in the Waikato, New Zealand. BLAKE Inspire is a week long leadership program, where young environmental leaders from across New Zealand work alongside environmental scientists.[9]

Wilbourne's photography has been featured in RNZ's Critter of the Week, showcasing some of his photos of the Long-tailed Cuckoo.[10]

Climate

Wilbourne has worked with School Strike 4 Climate New Zealand where he organised his local climate strike in March 2023, which mobilised local students. Wilbourne handed an open letter to Nelson Mayor Nick Smith.[11] Wilbourne was apart of School Strike 4 Climate New Zealand's March 2023 strike, that mobilised thousands of students across New Zealand to march for Climate Action.[12][13] Wilbourne was included in RNZ's: Climate strikes: Thousands march around New Zealand to demand action.

In December 2022, Wilbourne was a panelist for Save the Children New Zealand's youth panel that interviewed Climate Change Minister James Shaw ahead of COP27.[14]

Community

Wilbourne has been involved with the 'Streets for People' project lead by Tasman District Council, in which he "provided input for the Richmond Streets for People Project". The project has received $2.4 million in Government funding and support to re-design several local streets, to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.[15] Wilbourne was a panelist at MILKED Screening Nelson 2023, a screening of a documentary that exposes New Zealand's agricultural industry.[16]
