Muscular is a Finnish neo-funk group based in Turku.[1] The band combines elements of funk, soul, R&B, and electronic music with live instrumentation and synthesizer-driven production, with a strong emphasis on groove, interaction, and performance.
The project is led by keyboardist, pianist, and producer Ilmari Aitoaho, who is also known for his extensive work across the Finnish music scene.[2]
Background and Formation
Muscular was formed in Turku, Finland, a city recognized for its active independent music scene and cross-genre collaboration. The project was established as a live and studio-oriented band centered around groove-based music and collective performance.
The band operates with a seven-member lineup, bringing together musicians with backgrounds in funk, soul, jazz, indie, and electronic music. From its inception, Muscular has focused on developing a shared musical language through rehearsal and live interaction rather than defining itself within a single genre framework.[3]
Ilmari Aitoaho serves as the central creative force behind the project, shaping its musical direction through composition, production, and band-oriented arrangement.[4]
Music and Style
Muscular’s sound is grounded in funk music, combining rhythm-driven structures with elements of soul, R&B, and contemporary electronic production. Their music is characterized by groove-centered arrangements, deep basslines, synthesizer textures, vocoder-processed vocals, and arpeggiated electronic patterns, alongside live instrumentation.
Rather than adhering to fixed genre boundaries, the band’s approach emphasizes movement, repetition, and variation, balancing structured composition with performance-based flexibility. The band's music has been compared to artists such as Daft Punk, Franc Moody, Kavinsky, and Prince.
The lyrical and thematic concepts of the band's material are deeply collaborative, with vocal melodies and lyrics developed in partnership with the singers. Their second album features prominent vocal contributions from band members Veera Kaasalainen (VEBBE) and Oskari Ruohonen (Oskr), alongside notable guest vocalists such as Linda Ilves (Why So Shy, Maija Vilkkumaa), Johanna Rauma (Punomo), and Irene Hovi (Whale & The Village).
Career and Releases
Muscular releases music through the Finnish independent label Drink Tonight Records, which operates across neo-funk, electronic, indie, and ambient genres. The band released their debut album On The One in 2022, followed by the EP Stand Still in 2024.[5]
In February 2025, Muscular released their self-titled second full-length album, Muscular.[6] The album was preceded by the singles "Years and Years," "The Queen," and "Super Macarena," the latter accompanied by an official music video.
While the debut album was largely producer-driven by founder Ilmari Aitoaho alone in the studio, the sophomore record was designed to capture the collective energy and chemistry of the live band. The creative process began in Berlin during the summer of 2022, where Aitoaho collaborated directly with the rhythm section to develop the tracks. The foundations of the album were recorded later that summer, just prior to the release of their debut album, and polished over the following two years. The album's mixing and mastering were handled by Matias Kiiveri at Hollywood House Studios (known for his work with J. Karjalainen, Erja Lyytinen, and Tuure Kilpeläinen), achieving a modern fusion of acoustic warmth and contemporary production values.
During the promotional cycle for the singles in May 2024, the band participated in an international competition organized by Thomann and Shure, which included hundreds of acts worldwide. Following a combination of public voting and jury evaluation, Muscular was selected as the global winner.[7] As part of the grand prize, the band performed a landmark live set at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The celebrity jury included Michael League (Snarky Puppy), Hannah V, Jack Drury (Shure UK), Alexandra Ilieva, and Claudia Regolatti.[8][9]
Live Performances
Live performance plays a central role in Muscular’s artistic identity. Their concerts emphasize groove, interaction, and dynamic variation, often extending beyond the structure of recorded material and allowing space for improvisation and real-time adaptation. The band’s live approach draws from funk, soul, and jazz-based performance traditions, where responsiveness between musicians is a key element.[10]
