Murray Williams is an award-winning children's book author and journalist who resides in South Africa.

Author

Williams met adventurer Riaan Manser when they competed in the Berg River Canoe Marathon. As Manser notched up his world-first explorations, Williams interviewed him numerous times. Some years later, Williams and his daughter chanced upon Manser during a bike ride in Somerset West and the idea that they create a series of children's books together, based on Manser's expeditions, was born. Manser felt the timing was perfect as he and his wife Vasti were about to become parents.

Williams co-wrote the book, illustrated by Martinus Van Tee[1], with industrial psychology graduate, Chantel Tarling. My First African Adventure, describing Manser's solo circumnavigation of Africa on a bicycle, was published by Random House South Africa. It won the Children's Book Category and was crowned the Overall Winner at the 2023 South African Book Awards.[2][3][4] The book was awarded the top national honours by Nielsen BookData[5], the SA Booksellers Association[6] and the Publisher's Association of South Africa.[7] My First African Adventure has also been printed in Afrikaans, in partnership with Die Stigting vir die Bemagtiging van Afrikaans.[8]

The team's second book, My First Wild Island Adventure, details Manser's second record-breaking adventure - kayaking alone and unaided around the world's fourth largest island, Madagascar. The launch of the book became another first-of-its -kind when Williams and Manser read their book in diving suits inside the I&J Exhibit at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.[9]

Journalist

In 2011 in consultation with executive editor Gasant Abarder of The Cape Argus, Williams began the "Name and Shame" anti-drunk-driving campaign. The newspaper's Wall of Shame won the Best Print Award at the inaugural Brandhouse Responsible Drinking Media Awards.[10][11]

Williams is also an international adventure journalist.[12] He is on the Honour Roll of The Berg River Canoe marathon, having completed the 240km paddle six times.[13] In his own first, Williams became the first person to kayak solo across False Bay in 2008.[14]

In 2016, Williams was part of the editorial team reporting on the Western Cape Government's Community Safety improvement partnership.[15]

Ultima Antarctic Expeditions

Williams is the Founding Manager of Ultima Antarctic Expeditions[16], which is a full member of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO). Ultima Antarctic Expeditions supported internationally renowned mountain and polar guide, Dr. Christoph Höbenreich, on his expeditions to New Swabia in Antarctica[17]
