Muktar Tolani Shagaya (born 16 December 1989) is a Nigerian Politician[1], entrepreneur, renewable energy specialist, international development worker and philanthropist.[2] He is an executive director at Asolar Systems Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria's leading provider of alternative clean energy solutions.[3] He is also the founder of LTBL Solar Company.[4] Shagaya is a Member-Elect, Federal House of Representatives. He won the election to become the member representing Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency on Sunday 26th February.[5][6]

Early Life

Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, to Alhaji and Alhaja Bola Shagaya, Muktar obtained his first school leaving certificate at Lebanese Community School, Yaba, Lagos State, afterwards, he had a brief stint at Adesoye College, Offa, Kwara State, he then proceeded to Rockwell College, Tipperary, Ireland and then Malvern College, Worcestershire, United Kingdom to obtain A-Level/AS & GCSE.

Education

Muktar Shagaya holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International relations from the University of Plymouth.

He also holds a Master of Arts degree in International development and Development management in the United Kingdom from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.[7]

Professional Career

Muktar Shagaya began his professional career as an Intern at the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria), after which he also interned at AMG Petro Energy[8] to gain more knowledge and experience of the energy industry in Nigeria. He also has some experience as a Junior Assistant at the Infrastructure Bank Plc[9]

He went ahead to take on the role of Business Development Manager at Karmod Nigeria Fabricated Technologies, Nigeria's foremost brand in the prefabricated building sector.[10]

He developed interest in the renewable energy sector and international development work and decided to work in that sector as a Project Officer/Energy Associate at Rural Electrification Agency[11], the Implementing Agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria tasked with electrification of rural and unserved communities. While at the agency, He worked on several projects including the World Bank-sponsored FADAMA project[12] and the Nigeria Electrification Project.[13]

Muktar is an executive director at Asolar Systems Nigeria Limited, one of Nigeria's leading provider of alternative clean energy solutions.[3] He is also the founder of LTBL Solar Company.[4]

Philanthropy

Muktar Shagaya is involved in a lot of philanthropy works. He is the founder of Muktar Shagaya Movement (MSM), a non profit, non-governmental organization that is focused on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and improving the quality of life of Nigerians.[14] The foundation has successfully implemented projects like dredging bore holes to provide potable water for communities, educational empowerment through purchase of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination forms, provision of Home solar systems to people in need, Small and medium-sized enterprises intervention programs amongst others.[15][16][17]

Muktar Shagaya is also a co-founder of Rising generation organisation (RIGO). a non-governmental organisation he founded with partners in order to pioneer a new generation for economic and socio-political progress in Nigeria through activities like capacity building and mentorship programmes.

Political Career

Muktar Tolani Shagaya is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress. He declared his intention to contest for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives (Nigeria) On 5th May, 2022, He picked up his nomination form to represent his constituency. On May 27, 2022, Muktar emerged as the All Progressive Congress House of Representatives candidate for Asa/Ilorin West federal constituency in Kwara State for the 2022 general elections.[18]
