Moses "Amik" Beaver, (died February 13, 2017)[1] was a self-taught, award winning Indigenous peoples in Canada|Indigenous Canadian artist, in the Woodlands style. He was born in Neskantaga First Nation and lived in Nibinamik First Nation.[2] He illustrated An Aboriginal Carol[3] written by David Bouchard and translated into Inuktitut, by Susan Aglukark. This book was awarded a White Raven by the International Youth Library. He also illustrated Whispers of the Ancients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time[4] written by Tamarak Song.

Moses taught art and shared traditional Ojibwe teachings in public schools throughout Northwestern Ontario.[5]

Death and inquiry

On February 13, 2017, Moses Beaver was pronounced dead at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after being held at the Thunder Bay jail. Regional Supervising Coroner, Dr. Michael Wilson confirmed that an inmate died at the jail, but would not confirm that it was Beaver.

An inquest into Beaver's death was scheduled for November 4, 2019. It was delayed based on input from the parties involved. A new date has not been set.[6]
